Welcome to the Southeastern Ohio Council of Teachers of English webpage. SOCTE is the regional affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of English. Included in our numbers are teachers from elementary to college and from Portsmouth to Zanesville, from Chillicothe to Marietta.

Our Mission

(taken directly from the first section of the constitution)


The purpose of the association shall be to bring together at intervals English language arts teachers of Southeastern Ohio for mutual benefit and pleasure, to provide an opportunity for the discussion of common problems, to improve the teaching of English language arts, and to stimulate study and investigation. Objectives may be achieved in the following ways, among others:


  • Gathering and sharing with one another information about innovative educational programs.

  • Developing from a future-oriented perspective ways of evaluating present practices in the teaching of English language arts.

  • Affiliating with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (OCTELA).
