Subject: Group? Is anyone out there?????

I am feeling a little frustrated here with the group work. It seems that there are only 2 of us in this group that complete any of the tasks. So, it makes it very difficult to discuss and try new tasks if no one is there to respond.

I will be the discussion director.

Questions and points I would like to raise:
1. Do you think that in this novel the lack of a mother figure has anything to do with all of the problems that Paul himself had to deal with his own mother?
2. Do you feel that he chose to place a father figure in this book because of his own lack of one?
3. How could this book be discussed on a scientific basis only?
4. What do you think that the animals represent in this book? Do you think that there could be any strong connection between them and another issue plaguing Paul?

Karissa,
I think we are the only ones reading the books. I know that at this point Meta is no longer working on this, but I don't know about anyone else. I guess that it is up to you and me. I will post my part ASAP. My book is at school, and we have been out since last Thursday, so I will let you know.

Subject: Connector

Although I have done this part before, a discussion I was having with my husband last night has prompted my thoughts here.
This book, the Loch, has many similarities of the other books we have read lately by Zindel. They remind me of the Goosebumps series, yet with a twist. They seem to deal with more real-life-like creatures that could exist. In this case, it does bring up the Loch Ness monster that is said to live under the waters in England. The Goosebump books seem to be less realistic when it comes to the monsters presented in the series. However, they have the same action and adventure.
I also want to point out the connections we both made between the books Zindel has written; The Reef of Death, The Doomstone, Loch, and even Raptur (we have already read this one.) In each of this books, there is a young boy as the protagonist with a girl acting as his support. There is always an adult in the story that is the scientist working on some experiment in which a new creature is discovered or kept secret. We also made the connection that in each of these books, the creatures all make a certain sound. In the Reef of Death, the sound was EEE... EEE..., in the Doomstone, it was Click... Click Click.. and in Lock, it is a Click Clack Click, Click Clack Click. I guess this takes you back to the Jaws movie, where when you heard the Dah, Dum, Dah Dum, the shark was approaching, and the faster it became, the closer the shark was to attacking. I believe that this is a way to intensify your attention to the book and the fact that something gruesome is about to happen.
