Subject: Connections

Middle school students love mysteries, gore, attachments to baby animals, and sweet love interests. What middle school student has not heard of the loch ness monster and not be intrigued by this book? So, I think that my students will have an immediate connection with this book.

Another major connection that I think you can make with this book is to movies. One movie that I and my fellow middle school teachers connected Loch to was Free Willie. Students will think of this sappy film and be able to relate it to the baby plesiosar's demise. Saving a cute, defenseless animal from ruthless wealthy people, which happens to be a huge water creature, is again a great connection with middle school students.

Lastly, one of the main characters is a dinosaur, which lives in present day. What boy hasn't been interested in dinosaurs and wanted to actually see one? Think of Jurassic Park, Land Before Time, among other movies that brings dinosaurs to life in the present.

Great Job!! I really hadn't thought of the connections
you made to the story. You are right, though, the movie
"Free Willy" has its comparisons. I found myself feeling
sorry for the little creature! Isn't that funny!

I too connection with this on the level of saving animals and an interest in dinosaurs and extinct species. I think most middle school students would make this connection too!

I am still working on getting a good illustration to send out.
For some reason, I can scan my illustration onto my computer,
but it will not show up right in the attachment. It does not
help that I have no idea how to do things on the computer. Once
again, please be patient!
