Subject: The enviornment our students live in--created by their parents

Betty the Loon, Beatrice, creates an unhealthy environment for her two girls and then blames them for everything. How could a parent just "think about" going to a science fair when it was such an honor for Tillie to get to go?

She was so worried about what was on their backs that she forgot to put her brain together and act "normal."

She keeps her daughters home to clean, she gives them cigarettes, and she is afraid that she will be embarrassed by them. Thanks god for prozac, valium, and other new pretty drugs now days. This is a woman who needed to be on them to make a decent environment for her children.

Wow, I agree!! As I was reading this drama, I kept thinking about how dysfunctional their life was. I could not imagine my mother killing my rabbit. Also, I couldn't imagine not attending my child's Science Fair program.

That's really dysfunctional! How do your students handle this kind of topic?

Subject: Paul Zindell's novels

I can't help but notice that, at this point, all of Paul Zindell's novels have one thing in common-- they all deal with the dysfunctional family theme. I realize he writes from experience. Wow, he must of had a terrrible life.

Here, here.

Do we have to read another novel about his crazy mother? Although, I am sure that writing about his horrible life helped him, I don't want to know anymore information about the lady who refers to her children as stones tied to her neck.

I hadn't noticed this as a recurring theme in Zindel's books. Can you guess how many of your students come from dysfunctional families?

Ido think that he reworks the same issues from his childhood in all three books that we read. This may be a way of healing for him.

Subject: pullitzer prize material ?

It is hard for me to judge whether or not something is Pulitzer Prize material, but I do believe this is a powerful play. I could relate to it on several levels and to me that is where the power of the writing is. I could tell Zindel was writing from raw emotion and so he could tap into those emotions in his readers or his audience. At least he did for me.
