What did everyone think about this book? I enjoyed this one better then the "Reef" or "Dooms Stone".

I think I still like Doomstone better. But there are aspects of this book I like.

One of the things I do like about this book is the "humanizing" of the monster. I would definitely ask my students to describe the REAL monster in this book. Is it the animal or the humans? How do we define monster?

I would also have a discussion about the ethical dilemma--if something is dangerous to humans does that automatically make it OK to kill it, to wipe it out? Where do we draw lines on when it's OK to kill creatures?

I think our students are definitely old enough to consider these questions, and could really explore them.

I guess I will be the summarizer since I think that's the only one I haven't done.

Subject: Summary

In this book, a boy named Loch traveled to a lake in upstate New York with his father and kid sister. He defied his father's boss and his father in order to save animals of a prehistoric species from the opportunists who wanted to kill them for the money. Ultimately his father regained perspective and helped him give the creatures an escape route.

Does anyone have a take on the bond there seems to be in so many of Zindel's books about a boy and girl befriending one another? This seems to be a common characterisic of his books. I can relate because I have had many good friends in my life of the opposite sex. It does make for a valuable friendship.
