Subject: Discussion question #1

How do the mother's attitudes and behaviors affect the two daughters' behaviors? For example, how do her comments and own clothing choices affect Tilly and Ruth differently?

I think the two daughters have different aspects on how they dress do to the relationships with their mother. Also the mother seems to favor one over the other as far as comments and how they are treated

Ruth seems to have a more open relationship with her mother than Tillie. Ruth expresses her feelings and anger towards her mother when she (Beatrice) gets into one of her negative moods. Tillie is very reserved towards her mother and in her appearance.

How do you think Ruth and Tillie felt when they heard their mother talk about how great her life was as a teenager?

How do you think they felt after Ruth heard the teachers talking about how crazy people thought Beatrice was when she was in school?

At first I would say they may have believed her but again how could you when she was always sending mix messages. She seems to be a miserable person who does not like the life she has currently so how are they to believe her when she tells them about her teenage years.

I think that felt ashame and afraid she would embarish them at the school and possible humilate them considering the way she was dress and the big deal about the feather she was going to wear.

I think the girls were apprehensive with her statement of having a great teenage life because of the negative environment she has produced for her two teenaged daughters.

I believe the daughters thought their mother was crazy but when actually hearing other people comment on her craziness they felt sorry for her. Especially Tillie since she is somewhat of an odd ball in school. It was okay for the girls to think their mother was crazy but I think it hurt when other people thought the same as them.

Why do you think Beatrice killed the rabbit and arranged for Nanny to leave?

How do you think she'll replace the income she had from taking care of Nanny?

The rabbit to me symbolizes either resentment or revenge on Tillie since she was the top five of the science project and be successful versus mom who has been a basic failure and miserable most of her life blaming others for her problems.

The replace of income is to find a different get rich scheme. At the end she was talking about tea shop. I see a similarity between this book and the "Pigman and Me", where Paul Zindels on mother always had some idea or plan on how to make money like the dogs for example.

I think the resentment about the rabbit also is about not wanting the girls to be making deals without her. She seems to try to always keep them in conflict with each other, so she doesn't want them BOTH to like the rabbit. She doesn't want them to get along well enough to truly share the rabbit.

As for the tea shop, does ANYONE (including Beatrice) think there is any chance at all that she'll even come CLOSE to getting something like that off the ground?

The idea that the rabbit would keep them at conflict with each other is a good point. However, would it strenghten their relationship between the two sisters and back fire on mom?

The reality of the tea shop is slim to none. It is just another one of her pipe dreams.

I do think killing the rabbit is going to backfire on mom. I just don't think mom is capable of thinking ahead. At all.

I think, whether she knows it or not, she deliberately plays the girls against each other so that one of them will always be HER "best friend." If they start getting along with each other, she'll be shut out.

I was unsure what the killing of the rabbit symbolized...maybe a new beginning, getting all the anger out. Connie I would have to agree with you symbolic meaning. I'm assuming Tillie was quite similer to her mother in school but Tillie has able to overcome obsticles that her mother was not able to overcome, which made Beatrice jealous.

I also feel that mom tries to keep the upper hand on the girls. Her "power trip" is a major barrier between her and her daughters relationships. I feel very sorry for her. There are so many good memories of having daughters that she is missing out on.

Are we ready to sign up for jobs for the next novel? If so, I would like to sign up for illustrator for this novel. I guess I mean I will try to do the illustrator. I am not very good at this sort of thing, but I might as well try it.
