I do not know. Maybe he just wanted him to look silly and see the need for not fighting.

I don't think Nonno Frankie's main goal was to teach Paul to fight. I think that he consistently helped Paul to "put more tools in his belt" Throughout the novel, he helped Paul figure out how to deal with life by meeting it head on. Although I am opposed to "fighting" on every level,I am very Pro-standing up for yourself. I think many kids could relate to the predicament Paul found himself in-- faced with someone's anger and possessing no "tools" or experience to help him deal with it. Nonno Frankie gave Paul enough variety of actions AND philosophy so that when the situation arrose, he could choose how he would react...or at least he had some optional behaviors into which to fall. :)

Why did Paul Zindel find it important to tell readers about his life? What was the message that he was trying to send?

I made several connections with this novel. It reminded me of close friends (pigmen) I had in childhood and throughout my life so far. I could also relate because, like John, my parents have been divorced not once but twice. My dad drank and smoked marijuana. This caused some violent outbursts and odd behavior such as John's mother had at times. Connie's twins reminded me of the twin that I had but never knew. What connections can you make with the story?
