Zim Zam

Zim Zam is an intentional community in formation. Zim Zam is a word coined to express our desire for vibrant physical, mental and emotional health. Zim Zam means being "in sync"; being connected with our world; flowing, growing and living in tune with the earth.

We own a 3 bedroom house on an acre of land 3 miles from downtown Asheville, North Carolina.

Our highest desire is to find
people who may wish to join our community,
people who are vegan and
people who share our belief of not owning animals.

BUT
We are also interested in
activist oriented folks,
people who are interested in sustainable living and
want to create and live in a permaculture based eco-neighborhood and
want to work to ultimately create an eco-city.

Potentials for Expansion
We envision expanding to adjacent properties,
as well as possibly purchasing some rural land within bicycling distance of Asheville.
We will soon have space (openings) for more people to live on our current property,
Short term situations (camping, sublets, etc.) are also possible for sincerely interested folks.
We have a three step process for moving here and that includes camping situations.

We are not considering at this time any open ended visiting.
Any visitors must have a date at which they will be departing.

Purchase of adjacent or nearby houses is also an option that is available for joining Zim Zam.
There is also the possibility of building a second story on our current house
or conversion of the garage to a living space.
These options also require money
and the person wanting to do this might need
to live somewhere else until the new living space was available.

Are you interested in creating and living in an eco-neighborhood?

EVEN IF YOU ARE SOMEONE WHO IS NOT VEGAN
OR YOU HAVE A PET
WE ARE STILL INTERESTED IN PEOPLE OF ACTIVIST AND PERMACULTURE MINDSET
PURCHASING ADJACENT AND/OR NEARBY HOUSES!

THERE ARE CURRENTLY NEARBY HOUSES and PROPERTIES ON THE MARKET
AND OTHERS WHICH MAY BE AVAILABLE IF THEIR OWNERS WERE APPROACHED ABOUT SELLING.

Visiting
We are interested in visitors with a sincere interest in the potential of joining us here either by purchasing nearby houses and/or property, or by helping to add living space to our current dwelling.

If you are interested in visiting us, contact us by telephone in order that we may talk with you and assess the potentials. We make decisions by consensus, so contact us at least a month ahead of the time you are thinking of for a visit.

We do not have time to accomodate people who are visiting communities in a general way. We are all very busy and don't have the time that we found was necessary to accomodate that sort of visiting.

We are sometimes open as a place to crash for a day or two for activists traveling from one place to another. Contact by phone is preferred, as email sometimes is not answered for days, or even weeks.

We are not considering at this time any open ended visiting. Any visitors must have a date at which they will be departing.

Right now the easiest way for us to expand is for interested folks to buy adjacent properties or to build additions to our existing structures. There is some space at the Eco-House which could be made into sleeping space for additional folks if you are willing to work to create it. People could rent nearby until such time as more space was created here or some ability to purchase is arranged.

Our Vision for Zim Zam:

  • Consensus Decision Making
  • Non-Violence - Ahimsa
  • No Animal Ownership, Including No Pets

In forming ZimZam one proposal has been to create a non-profit corporation which would assist the community in fulfilling its goals. The following purposes have been proposed within the draft bylaws for ZimZam Foundation:

  1. Preservation and protection of wildlife and its habitat,
  2. Watershed protection,
  3. Research into and demonstration of sustainable integration of human habitation within the natural environment,
  4. Research into and demonstration of shelter/housing which is non-toxic and minimally allergenic to the inhabitants as well as non-polluting to the surrounding environment,
  5. Research into and demonstration of the process of transition from existing unsustainable models of human habitation, both urban and rural, to sustainable habitation.

Contacting Us
If you are interested
send us email at: ab414@seorf.ohiou.edu
or write to us at:

We are trying a new method of responding to people.
If you contact us with a sincere interest in Zim Zam,
We'll call you on the phone (if you are within the U.S.)

We prefer letters or phone to communicate, as Cicada is the only one who ends up responding to people when we use email.
We also don't necessarily respond as quickly to people as you might like. I apologize in advance.
A non-response may mean we are very busy.
Don't hesitate to contact us a second time if we don't respond the first time.
